I- 90 West

Day 35
October 12, 2010

Leaving lake Placid

Leaving Lake Placid the colors of the hardwoods begin to retreat in the distance. The evergreen fir, pine and larch march to the foreground as the hardwoods fade.  Though there’s still a strong presence of the hardwoods and their colors along the road, the evergreens are making their stand.  Among them is the larch, an evergreen anomaly that turns from winter green to light green then yellow, and gradually drops its needles- a deciduous evergreen.

I-90 West

Our destination is Niagara Falls tonight.  This means a lot more driving today than usual, but the goal is in sight.  Our stops are frequent and brief.  Gas stations and scenic pull outs give us pause to get out of the car and breathe the crisp autumn air, stretch our legs, and rotate drivers.  One great interlude was at the Soda Fountain restaurant in Remsen, NY.  Just a few blocks off of Hwy 12 N we stop for a break and as we’re pulling out I see the big ice cream cone sign showing the way to Soda Fountain. We turn around and a few blocks off the highway we find a blast to the past at a 1950s diner complete with cutout posters of James Dean, Elvis and Marilyn Monroe.  Two chocolate peanut butter milkshakes later we are thoroughly stuffed.  A few miles later we join I-90 W and move closer to Niagara Falls.  I-90 W - can you believe it?  I- 90 West!
